Welcome, Friends from Pensacola and Jackson!

I net so many great people in Pensacola, FL and Jackson, MS this weekend for the Petfinder.com Adoption Options workshops! People in the south truly are like nobody else in the USA. We enjoyed both cities and meeting people in animal rescue. People in both cities requested information on how to post a Paypal donation [...]

Gearing up for HSUS Taking Action for Animals Conference!

Washington, D.C. here I come!

It’s my first visit to the nation’s capitol, and I’m pretty excited. Not only do I get to rub shoulders with some of the coolest and smartest people in the animal welfare world, I get to teach some of them about social media! This is the kind of thing I have wanted to do with The Social Animal from the very beginning.

Along the way launching this site I’ve had some very bumpy roads, but from here on out it’s going to be a lot smoother. More content, updated more regularly. So if you’ve been hanging in there with me, I am very grateful! If you’re just now joining us, then you’re in for some great and helpful content.

As always, if there are specific issues you’re facing or something you don’t understand about your social media, please leave a comment or shoot me an email. I’d be glad to answer any questions publicly so everyone can learn together. That is the whole purpose of this site, after all!

If you’re coming to TAFA, email me or tweet me! I’d love to meet you there. I’ll be posting notes and video throughout the conference. Thanks for joining me!

p.s. are you on Facebook yet? Facebook just surpassed 250 MILLION users last week. yep, that’s a quarter of a billion individuals using this free service. Take a few minutes and create a profile for yourself and a page or group for your organization. Don’t know how? Look for a video here soon that will walk you through it!

Talk soon,

Emily

Hello to new friends!

I had a great time today presenting at the Humane Society of the United States Animal Care Expo in Las Vegas! I was so glad to see so many people attending the Web 2.0 tools seminar. I could see a lot of confusion on peoples’ faces, though, so I know that all your questions were not fully answered.

That’s what this web site is for, and welcome! Together we will explore all the new tools you can use to promote your shelter/rescue group/humane society or whatever it is you do in the animal welfare field. There are lots of places on the Internet where you can find instruction on how to use Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. but none that is geared specifically towards animal welfare people. I created thesocialanimal.com for you, so that we can use these tools to help animals all over the world.

So please, send me your questions and ideas. My goal is to help you make better use of the web. I’m glad to help in any way I can, because I love teaching people how to use new media…and I also love animals!

It was great to meet so many of you today. Thanks for coming to our presentation and I’d love to hear your feedback. Keep the questions coming; I can guarantee you’re not the only one who’s a little bewildered at times!

What’s one thing you can do RIGHT NOW? Go out to Twitter and get yourself an account. I’d recommend setting up a separate email address just for managing your social media, if you can–because it will generate a lot of email (confirmations, opt-ins, etc.) so you might set one up that is socialmedia@myorg.com or something. If you don’t know how to set up an account on your server, or don’t have permission, just set up a free one. Use Google’s gmail or Yahoo mail, set one up that might be okhumanesocialmedia@yahoo.com or something like that. It might help you to manage the influx of email that will come with these new ventures.
