“How Can I Promote My Event on Facebook?”

Recently I got a question via email from a Social Animal blog reader: “I am currently managing the FaceBook page for my shelter. The event I created is actually managed under a different name; it was set up before I realized you could manage multiple pages under your email. I can’t seem to invite all [...]

Hello to new friends!

I had a great time today presenting at the Humane Society of the United States Animal Care Expo in Las Vegas! I was so glad to see so many people attending the Web 2.0 tools seminar. I could see a lot of confusion on peoples’ faces, though, so I know that all your questions were not fully answered.

That’s what this web site is for, and welcome! Together we will explore all the new tools you can use to promote your shelter/rescue group/humane society or whatever it is you do in the animal welfare field. There are lots of places on the Internet where you can find instruction on how to use Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, etc. but none that is geared specifically towards animal welfare people. I created thesocialanimal.com for you, so that we can use these tools to help animals all over the world.

So please, send me your questions and ideas. My goal is to help you make better use of the web. I’m glad to help in any way I can, because I love teaching people how to use new media…and I also love animals!

It was great to meet so many of you today. Thanks for coming to our presentation and I’d love to hear your feedback. Keep the questions coming; I can guarantee you’re not the only one who’s a little bewildered at times!

What’s one thing you can do RIGHT NOW? Go out to Twitter and get yourself an account. I’d recommend setting up a separate email address just for managing your social media, if you can–because it will generate a lot of email (confirmations, opt-ins, etc.) so you might set one up that is socialmedia@myorg.com or something. If you don’t know how to set up an account on your server, or don’t have permission, just set up a free one. Use Google’s gmail or Yahoo mail, set one up that might be okhumanesocialmedia@yahoo.com or something like that. It might help you to manage the influx of email that will come with these new ventures.
