50 Responses to How to recover or claim a Facebook page that belongs to you, but someone else owns or controls

Great article and video! I had to like the video also. I especially appreciate the link you had in your story for resolving the issue.

I primarily build websites, but over the past year, nearly 25% of my business has drifted into social media. I am doing work for a non-profit group that is not entirely tec savvy who had a volunteer create a Facebook page and can no longer be found. With a few hundred likes we did not want to start over and hopefully, with your information, we will not have to.

So, this is the long version of saying thanks or the information.

Thanks Bill–it means a lot to hear that!

  4. Emily Garman March 16, 2013 at 7:33 pm #

If your page was hacked, report the hacked page to Facebook and they will help you get control back.

Hi! I like the video a lot, very helpful!!! However, I created a page a while ago for the restaurant where I work and now I want to merge the page that people created to do check-ins to mine, but when I try to claim it gets stuck after I check the box “I am an official representative of…”. What should I do then? Thanks!!

  12. Emily Garman April 14, 2013 at 2:11 pm #

Do you have the documents it requests, or do you have an email address @yourdomain that you can add to your Facebook account? It tells you what you need to do to verify your account and verify that your page is official. If you can’t or don’t have those documents, then you won’t be able to prove that you officially represent the restaurant. I would ask the owners/manager of your business and see if you can work with them to get that documentation and make this work. They would probably be glad to have you managing the page for them!

  13. Maureen Bernardo April 18, 2013 at 1:02 am #

Hi Emily, I just want to know how can I claim back the page I made cause the new admins removed me as the manager of the page I created and they abandoned it and left a defamation to my name on facebook. It’s a business page and before I am the consultant of the business and gave the new admins a privilege as a manager knowing they are going to continue good advertising promotions which they failed to comply to.

  14. Emily Garman April 20, 2013 at 6:21 pm #

Maureen, the best thing I know to tell you is to follow the steps outlined in this blog post. If someone has stolen your property, then you can follow the steps to reclaim your copyright. If you can’t prove it or don’t have the documentation Facebook requires, then your best course of action is a civil suit or legal action against this person in your country of jurisdiction, or simply cut your losses and start over with a new page. Good luck!

Hello Emily, I added an extra admin and that person deleted my band page. Is there any way to get it back??

  16. Emily Garman May 1, 2013 at 8:23 pm #

Hi Manuel, I’m so sorry this happened to you. No, unfortunately, once someone has deleted a page, there is no way to get it back. 🙁

  17. Manuel U. May 3, 2013 at 12:20 am #

AWWW man, It’s weird because I type in the band’s name on the search bar and the page comes up, I click on it and it takes me to my homepage. thanks for replying Emily. If anyone has problems with their pages I’ll send them your way.

Dear Emily, I tried notifying facebook on the option OTHER but I do not get the format to fill out, does it have anything to do with the country I am in? Mexico? Thank you for your help, the page I am trying to get back as we lost the access is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Casa-Sandra-Holbox/215612830809?ref=ts&fref=ts

  19. Emily Garman June 17, 2013 at 4:32 pm #

Yes–it seems that this only works for users in the USA. Sorry! 🙁

Hello Emily, I created a page and made some admins , they removed me as an admin what can I do to recover it?

  21. Emily Garman June 22, 2013 at 8:21 pm #

The only thing you can do is “report” the page to Facebook, by proving that it is your property. They will ask you to submit lots of documentation for this.

Our ex-SEO admin employee changed the all the login information as well as the security questions and then deleted the email account associated with the facebook acct. Facebook wrote back that this was not an intellectual property issue, and simply pointed me to the Admin FAQS because they don’t support this type of claim. All we want to do is delete the page and start over. Any other ideas?

  24. claire July 18, 2013 at 4:38 pm #

    Hey Emily,
I have searched for an answer for this – I don’t get the option “Is this your business” When I click on the button next to like the only options that pop up are: Create a Page, Like, Share, Send Feedback, Report Page, Privacy and Terms. I can’t even get to the option that allows me to verify I am the owner.

  25. Shirley Ludford August 5, 2013 at 9:07 am #

Hii, I have tried to use your information and video, without success. An ex volunteer hijacked one of our radio station facebook pages. How do we take back control? It is getting extremely frustrating going round and round in circles for a few weeks. Many thanks.

  26. Catherine August 30, 2013 at 10:40 pm #

Hello Emily! I tried following your instructions to hopefully recover my page, and I think Facebook did some updating that makes your instructions incorrect. . .or something.

When I clicked on ‘Report’, it didn’t take me to the screen you have in your video. And then it’s just all crazy from there.

Is there an updated version of this? How do I go about reporting it now? Thanks!!

Someone else has my account and i cant get in…..am I able to get it back????

  28. Emily Garman September 6, 2013 at 9:49 am #

You can report it here and get help from Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/help/www/131719720300233

  29. Emily Garman September 6, 2013 at 9:57 am #

You need to go to your page, click on the little arrow/gear drop down, and choose ‘report page.” then you can report the hacking.

  30. Emily Garman September 6, 2013 at 10:01 am #

This may be because someone else has already claimed the page. Click on this link to report the intellectual property violation to Facebook and you should be able to get it back.

    Hi Emily
I created a fan page. After few months i added 3 moderator to my page and after that i deleted my self as Admin. Now i want my admin right. Please help how to regain my admin right?

  32. Emily Garman September 12, 2013 at 3:40 pm #

The first step is to ask one of the existing admins (moderators) on your page to add you back as an admin. It’s up to them whether they want to do that or not, since you gave up all your control of the page. If they don’t want to, then your only recourse is to file an intellectual property violation with Facebook, and you’ll have to provide a lot of documentation to Facebook in order to do that.

  33. Emily Garman September 12, 2013 at 3:46 pm #

Wow, that really stinks! I don’t suppose there is a “claim page” button on your page? If Facebook is not willing to help you, you probably need to just cut your losses and go ahead and create your own page. Since the old page has no activity (if that person deleted the email account, then he’s not really posting to that page at all), your new page will soon replace that one in search engines. There’s really nothing else you can do at this point, unfortunately. Sorry!

  34. Emily Garman September 12, 2013 at 3:48 pm #

I can’t really tell from your description, but here is what Facebook says about reporting a page.

  35. Gaurav Bidasaria September 21, 2013 at 1:35 pm #

Dear Emily, I reported a profile of my friend just to see what will happen and it got removed after few days. is there any possible way my friend get it back? please help

  37. Emily Garman September 30, 2013 at 6:41 pm #

Not really–if they actually deleted the profile you reported, then it must have been for a pretty legitimate reason–that is a very strong and permanent action taken by Facebook. Sorry!

@EmilyGarman so my family had a group that we had started a couple of weeks ago, the admins were 4 of us, this morning one of those 4 people decided to erase one of the 4 but instead eraser everybody, now the page has no Admins, how can I regain acces to being an admin??? Thank youuu

  42. Emily Garman October 29, 2013 at 7:49 pm #

Was this a group or a page? it is handled very differently.

  43. Shelley November 27, 2013 at 2:14 pm #

Thank you for the advice, but I got a reply from Facebook (just hours later) informing me that they were disregarding my claim b/c it wasn’t truly a copyright/trademark issue. Sigh.

Another thing i have one page and after some people did a report in it, the facebook close my page so what i can do to recover this page

  47. Ksenija March 5, 2014 at 2:34 pm #

Dear Emily, we had only one admin on our business page (…yeah, i know-stupid). after boss fired her – she removed herself from admin position. After that – we lost control over our page.

I followed your advice and tried to report the page – but i can’t press the “submit” button (it’s light blue). I’m from Europe. Please tell me, what else can we do? Page is very important to us. Thanks you!

  48. Emily Garman March 31, 2014 at 11:38 am #

    Hi Ksenija,

If there was only one admin on your page, and she removed herself, then your page does not have any admins. it is an “orphan” page. There is nothing else you can do, unfortunately. The only thing you can do is create a new page. There is no way that person who was fired (who used to be the admin) could even re-add herself as the admin and then add someone else, even if she wanted to. Once a page has no admins, there is no way to add anyone as an admin. I know–this is very poor design on the part of Facebook! Especially since there is now no way to delete your page at all. I’m really sorry! you will need to start over and create a new page.

  49. Kara May 10, 2014 at 11:50 am #

    Hi Emily,
I can’t get back into my business page and there is no option for “is this your business” I already filed a trademark infringement form twice with facebook and haven’t heard back. I was the admin, there isn’t another. How can I get in?

  50. The Social Animal May 12, 2014 at 11:08 am #

Hi Kara–how did you lose control of your page in the first place? If you were the only admin? This will help me diagnose.
